After a dominant performance in their first ever AFLW game, North Melbourne wants a repeat effort, but Greater Western Sydney will be desperate not to start the 2019 season 0-2.

The Giants (0-1, 93.1%, fourth in Conference B) were narrowly beaten by last year’s runners-up Brisbane last time out, but will hope their first home game of the season will lead to a better result.

The Kangaroos (1-0, 325%, first in Conference A) dominated Carlton in Hobart in what was their first ever AFL Women’s match, living up to their billing as pre-season flag favourites. The Giants though will provide a better test of their mettle.

West+Coast+Eagles+vs+Collingwood+Magpies+Live

Watch AFL Grand Finale Live West Coast Eagles vs Collingwood Magpies Live Streaming Free 2018 AFL Grand Finals 2018 Online, match will be kick off at Melbourne Cricket Ground Stadium, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, Saturday 29 September 2018 online, 14:30 pm (AEDT) and its broadcast on Channel Seven, Foxtell.

This year’s Grand Final combatants have defied expert expectations and long injury lists to be the last two standing for Saturday’s 2018 AFL Premiership finale at the MCG.

Not many outside the four walls of West Coast and Collingwood — even their most rabid followers — would have thought September silverware was within reach pre-season, let alone once their respective campaigns fell deeper into despair with the continued loss of key personnel.

That the Eagles (second) and Magpies (third) overcame the attrition to have the last dance on the MCG speaks volumes of the quality of each club’s coaches, fitness programs and lists.

Collingwood was the AFL’s second-worst hit team in 2018 for injuries to players in their best 22, while West Coast too has endured its own injury chaos this season.

The now-retired Eric Mackenzie didn’t play a game in 2018, dual Coleman Medallist Josh Kennedy was restricted to 13, inspirational ruckman Nic Naitanui missed out from round 17 with an ACL while versatile defender Brad Sheppard’s season ended with a hamstring tear early in the qualifying final win over the Pies.

Add the significant ankle setbacks to Jack Darling in his best season of AFL and prolific midfielder Luke Shuey, plus the Andrew Gaff suspension fiasco in round 20 that briefly rattled the club and its brand, and it seems a miracle the Eagles even made it this far.

Long injury lists expose a club’s depth and, left with no other option, West Coast went to the well early in 2018 and discovered talent lurking that could save their season.

Naitanui’s absence was offset by Scott Lycett and Nathan Vardy forming an unlikely ruck duo. The pair nullifed Collingwood’s All-Australian ruckman Brodie Grundy in the Perth final and did the same two weeks later against Melbourne at Optus Stadium opposed to the league’s best ruckman Max Gawn.

Collingwood has been equally resilient and brave, and were certainly not expected to cover the losses of Ben Reid, Jamie Elliott, James Aish, Flynn Appleby, Kayle Kirby, Rupert Wills, Alex Fasolo or Daniel Wells and make September action, let alone the ‘grannie’.

Torn ACLs to key backs Matt Scharenberg (round 19) and Lynden Dunn (round 15) later devastated the side’s renovated defence.

But this most unlikely of match-ups on the last Saturday in September is not only a celebration of mind over matter but of the prospect of a rare contest of contrasting game styles that both sides will try desperately to impose from the very first bounce at 12.30pm.

Collingwood’s 2018 brand of footy revolves on a slick midfield that revels in the contest and an unpredictable, selfless attack of medium-sized forwards and one giant Texan, the 211cm Mason Cox.

West Coast by name like to rule the air and their tall timber have soared at either end this year, while the side’s fast, effective creativity off half back and the unmatched conversion rate of its dynamic new attack inside 50 has been refreshing to watch.

Radio 6PR football analyst Kim Hagdorn has analysed as much AFL football in 2018 as anyone and believed some key elements would shape the destiny of the two proud clubs come Saturday.

While Eagles coach Adam Simpson played down the impact of a wet and rainy MCG, Hagdorn believes the ground conditions could significantly sway the game if it allows one side to get the game played on its terms.

“A wet MCG will certainly aid Collingwood, given the depth and quality of their midfield, backed by Brody Grundy,” Hagdorn said.

The Pies midfield is rated first in the AFL by Champion Data and they have protected their undermanned defence well all year. It was no coincidence when the two sides last met in the qualifying final that the Eagles got the better of Collingwood once they won the midfield battle in the last quarter to successfully feed hungry forwards Kennedy and Darling.

“West Coast don’t need to get the ball inside their forward 50 as much as Collingwood … their conversion rate once inside has been the best in the competition this year,” Hagdorn said.

The wider MCG would not faze West Coast as much as previously, given it has played a full season at new home ground Optus Stadium that is similar in dimension to the traditional home of football.

“Simpson has had a whole year to finetune his team’s structures across the ground, so they will feel a lot more confident this time around than in 2015,” Hagdorn said.

Credit should also be given to West Coast’s fitness and conditioning staff, who have given the Eagles some extra miles in the legs to manage the wider expanses of the 60,000-seat Perth stadium and MCG, where the side was unbeaten from two games in 2018.

“The way they used the run of Gaff and Masten from the wing … the team is fitter, and better strategy wise without a doubt this year,” Hagdorn said.

Like Collingwood, the Eagles would have only gained confidence by continually winning while continually losing elite players like Naitnaui and Gaff.

Richmond Tigers vs Collingwood Magpies match will be kickoff at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne, VIC, Australia, Friday 21 September 2018 online, 15:50 pm (AEDT) and its broadcast on Channel Seven, Foxtell.

Richmond have been posted at the $1.40 quote in the head to head betting and are favourites on the back of their superior record this season. They won 18 of their 22 regular season games and qualified in top position, while Collingwood claimed 15 victories on their way to finishing 3rd.

Richmond also head in with a fresh list, having had the week off after their 31 point Qualifying Final win over Hawthorn, while Collingwood will have had just six days recover from their most recent final, a 10 point win over the GWS Giants.

The clash between the two sides is a mouth watering one to say the least. Close to 100,000 fans are expected at the MCG and the portion of those that belong to the ‘Magpie Army’ can head in with some degree of optimism, despite their sides underdog status as Collingwood ranked higher than Richmond in a number of statistical measures over the course of the 2018 home and away season.

They were No.1 in the competition for disposals, 3rd for contested possession and 4th for clearances. Richmond were were 14th, 8th and 17th in these measures. Look for Scott Pendlebury, Taylor Adams and Steele Sidebottom to find plenty of the ball, while Brodie Grundy should get on top in the ruck.

However, Richmond have shown that they can absorb pretty much anything at the MCG and were 2nd for points conceeded, while Collingwood were 8th in this area. The Tigers will look to force their opposition into error before capitalising.

The battle between Richmond’s defenders and Collingwood’s forwards will be pivotal. The likes of Alex Rance ,Dylan Grimes and Nick Vlaustin will look to contain Will Hoskin-Elliot, Jordan De Goey and Josh Thomas, who have combined for 113 goals this season.

At the other end of the ground, the competition’s leading goal kicker, Jack Riewoldt, will be looking to make his mark, while Daniel Rioli and Josh Caddy are others that will present a danger to the Magpies.

Richmond have no major injury concerns. Dustin Martin and Daniel Rioli left training early during a session last week but are expected to play. Dan Butler may sneak back into the side after missing the Qualifying Final with injury, while Brandon Ellis is waiting in the wings.

Collingwood pulled up without any injuries out of the Giants win. Darcy Moore and Ben Reid are among those that are on the return from injury and it will be interesting to see whether Nathan Buckley rolls the dice on either of those two. Both are lacking match fitness.

Richmond have won the past four games between the two sides by an average margin of 26 points. They met in Round 2 this season and Round 19 with those games going the way of the Tigers by 28 and 43 points.

A feature of both of those clashes was that Collingwood stuck with Richmond until three-quarter time before the Tigers produced big last terms. In the most recent encounter, Jack Riewoldt and Dustin Martin combined for six goals for Richmond, while Brodie Grundy, Stele Sidebottom and Scott Pendlebury were very solid for the Magpies.

The two sides have not faced each other in a final since the 1980 Grand Final, which went the way of Richmond by a then record margin of 80 points. The Tigers are unbeaten at the MCG this year. Collingwood are nine from 15 at the venue in 2018.

Watch AFL Live Collingwood Magpies vs GWS Giants Live Streaming Free 2018 AFL Playoff Seasons Finals Week 02 Online, match will be kick off at Melbourne Cricket Ground Stadium, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, Saturday 15 September 2018 online, 19:25 pm (AEDT) and its broadcast on Channel Seven, Foxtell.

The second chances are done; now we’re playing for keeps. And the Pies have a fight on their hands to progress to the penultimate weekend of the season.

History says the losing qualifying finalist tends to win their semi final. Since the start of the decade, the losing qualifying finalists has won 12 of their 17 semi finals – Hawthorn becoming the fifth loser last night.

Teams that finish inside the top four generally end up in the final four. It tends to take something unusual for a qualifying finalist to lose two straight games and exit the finals in the second week. In the Hawks’ case, it was running into a team which ultimately was better than them through the home and away season on an underlying basis, and losinf key players both recently and earlier on in the piece.

Collingwood lost last weekend, while the GWS Giants won. The Pies’ loss was a close run thing, and it took an uncharacteristically physical effort from the Eagles (+16 in ground ball gets) in the fourth quarter for them to get over the line. The Giants’ win was not a close run thing, and one may argue it was one of the most comprehensive victories by one finalist over another in 2018.

If the two teams’ respective form carries over, it shapes as a high quality, aggressive, attacking game of football. For the right to a six day break, and a battering by a well-rested Richmond.

The Pies are unchanged for just the second time this year (the other times being Round 5 and Round 22), after its trio of returning players (Tyson Goldsack, Jeremy Howe and Adam Treloar) got through the qualifying final unscathed – each playing a critical role in Collingwood’s performance.

The Giants have made two changes, losing Josh Kelly to a meniscus tear and leaving Harry Perryman out of the team. In come Ryan Griffen and former Pie Lachie Keeffe. The latter would appear to have been selected primarily as a backup ruckman to Rory Lobb, who has the task of taming the man-god Brodie Grundy.

GWS beat the Pies at the MCG by 16 points in Round 2, but given it was so long ago how much can we really read into the game? It was the afternoon the Giants lost Tom Scully to a season-ending ankle injury, and the Pies lost Tim Broomhead to an ugly broken leg (don’t Google it).

GWS still had Jonathon Patton and Heath Shaw, and were playing Lachie Whitfield on a wing and Brett Deledio off half back. Collingwood have seen some changes too: Darcy Moore, Matt Scharenberg and Lynden Dunn were in the back six, and the forward line was 100 per cent small ball (as opposed to 90 per cent small ball).

The game itself was pretty even, the margin swinging back and forth all day, and the underlying performance of each team suggested the game was more or less a coin flip. In a lot of ways, it was a game between equals, though we didn’t realise it at the time.

As for tonight’s contest, markets are certainly subscribing to the long-term trend of top four finishers beating their lesser counterparts. Collingwood is a strong favourite, despite general and professional sentiment running counter.

For me, I see tonight’s game unfolding in a similar fashion to the Round 2 encounter in the aggregate: close all evening, with neither side able to streak its way to an advantage for a long period.

That’s because both teams map against each other well: both have strong and deep midfields, while Collingwood’s defence and GWS’ forward line are probably their weaker spots. Collingwood’s forward line lacks the names, but has been effective for most of the year; ditto GWS’ defence.

Collingwood looked all at sea in the first quarter against West Coast, unable to get their ground game going as the Eagles played in the air. GWS has the capacity to not just match Collingwood on the ground but exceed it, and with Zac Williams (probably my favourite player) back dishing from the half back line they’ve got part of the aerial game sorted too.

And for all of the talk about the Giants being the show ponies of the AFL, the team is sixth in the league for tackle rate (which adjusts for opponent time in possession), and is third for adjusted contested possessions (a proxy for ground ball gets). The Pies are seventh and fifth. Yep, it’ll be a battle of the midfields.

Semi-finals week is always a bit strange. Despite being the lower-ranked team, it often feels like the side coming off a win have more going for them.

For a long while that was little more than wishful thinking. Between 2008 and 2013 every team that finished in the top four played off in a preliminary final.

Since 2014, however, things have changed, with four of the eight semi-final winners being teams that finished in the bottom half of the eight.

Last year was a return to the norm for the sides with a double chance, but given how close this season has been, it’s fair to believe at least one of the Demons or Giants will find themselves in the final four.

According on the bookies Melbourne are heavy favourites to reach their first preliminary final since 2000 and hand the Hawks their fourth straight finals defeat.

It’ll take quite a turnaround from the last meeting between these sides for those things to happen. When they last met back in Round 4, the Hawks handed the Demons a 67-point hiding – Melbourne’s heaviest defeat since 2016.

Hawthorn cut the Dees up on turnovers that day, getting 77 points from takeaways – the second most Melbourne conceded in any game this year behind only their head-scratching loss to the Saints – and also dominated the stoppages, winning the count 56-38 and outscoring Melbourne 32-14 from clearances. It was a hiding in every sense as the Hawks knocked off the Demons for the 15th time in 16 games.

The stoppage numbers were slightly surprising, given Melbourne finished the season as the No.1 scoring team from stoppages at 35.6 points a game, but they were 10th for points against, giving up 29.5 points from stoppages.

Hawthorn, on the other hand, were only 14th for points for (26) but were No.1 for points against at just 26 points a game.

The ruck battle should be fascinating. Max Gawn is the best tap ruckman in the competition, but it’s his marking ability that sets him apart from most of his rivals.

Both sides have exceeded pre-season predictions and rank similarly in a number of areas. They have the same win-loss record of 11-4 and their points scored and points conceded are also eerily similar.

Collingwood have been posted favourite in the head to head betting on the back of the home ground advantage and some superior recent form. The Magpies have won their past seven games, while West Coast have lost three of their past four.

However, those losses came in the absence of a number of key players that may return from injury this weekend. Last Sunday, they were able to knock over GWS by 11 points at Perth Stadium.

On the same day, Collingwood proved to be too good for their old rivals, Essendon, by defeating the Bombers by 16 points in front of 70,000 fans at the MCG.

In that game, Scott Pendlebury, Steele Sidebottom and Taylor Adams found plenty of the footy, while Jordan de Grey booted three goals.

Look for that quartet to be prominent once again. Collingwood rank No.1 in the competition for total disposals, while West Coast are just 16th. The Eagles will need the likes of Andrew Gaff and Elliot Yeo to produce big games in the middle, while Shannon Hurn and Jeremy McGovern will be out to curb the Magpies forward thrusts with their intercept marking.

McGovern has played as a forward in recent weeks but may be swung back with Josh Kennedy and Jack Darling likely to return from injury.

Collingwood have a lengthy injury list and Flynn Appleby is the latest casualty. The good news is that Darcy Moore and Travis Varcoe look ready to return.

West Coast may regain some big names with Josh Kennedy, Jack Darling and Mark LeCras edging closer to a return from their respective injuries. Dom Sheed and Tom Barrass are others that are in the mix.

Collingwood have won the past two against West Coast and the last time the two sides met was in Round 18 of 2017 at Etihad Stadium. On that occasion the Magpies prevailed by eight points and it was Brodie Grundy that starred for the winners, while Jordan de Grey booted four goals.

It has been well documented that West Coast have a poor record a the MCG and they have won just three of their past nine at the venue. Two of those wins have come against Carlton. West Coast have not defeated the Magpies at the venue since Round 2 in 1995. Collingwood have won six of their 10 games at the home of footy in 2018.

Australian Football League Sydney Swans vs GWS Giants Live Stream Free, AFL 2018 Regular Seasons Final Week 01 AFL Live Stream. Sydney Swans vs GWS Giants match will be kickoff at Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney, NSW, Australia, Saturday 08 September 2018 online, 16:20 pm (AEDT) and its broadcast on Channel Seven, Foxtell.

AFL Live Stream

Sydney and GWS would be slightly disappointed with their respective finishing position’s after just missing out on the top four and the subsequent double chance.

The Swans lost their Round 23 clash to Hawthorn by nine points and that defeat saw them finish in 6th position, while GWS come off two successive losses and have had to settle for 7th.

The Giants battled injuries to key players in the concluding stages this season. They were beaten by Sydney to the tune of 20 points in Round 22 before going down to Melbourne by 45 in the last round of the regular season.

Despite their recent hiccups, both sides should benefit from the week off in between games and we can expect to see some big names to return. Lance Franklin is the most notable of those and the Sydney superstar was the matchwinner the last time the two sides met.

He will have a major say in proceedings, as will the Giants midfield trio of Callan Ward, Stephen Coniglio and Dylan Shiel. Those players are arguably in better form than their Swans counterparts.

The Giants rank higher than the Swans for disposals and contested possessions, while they are competition’s best for clearances. Sydney are 9th in this measure.

Another interesting stat is that both sides rank very similarly for points scored and points conceded. The side that takes their chances and converts in front of goal should just about be the one that comes out in front.

With Franklin sure to provide a target at one end, Jeremy Cameron will need to lift on his recent performances at the other end for GWS, while Giants fans will be hoping Toby Greene can prove his fitness and sneak into the side to add some much needed depth inside forward 50.

Both sides have lengthy injury lists but Sydney are expected to regain a couple of big names in Lance Franklin and Luke Parker. Both missed the Hawks loss.

GWS will be sweating on the fitness of Rory Lobb, who suffered a back injury in the loss to Melbourne. Toby Greene is an outside chance of returning and his presence would bolster the Giants forward line.

Sydney have won 11 of the 15 encounters between the two sides including both matches this season. They met as recently as Round 22 and on that occasion it was Sydney by 20 points at Spotless Stadium.

Earlier in the year, the Swans accounted for the Giants by 16 at the SCG. Sydney have a moderate record at their home ground this season, winning five from 11 at the venue. GWS have ventured to the SCG on six occasions since 2012 for just one win.

This shapes as a real flip of the coin job. Sydney are better placed from an injury perspective but if GWS can get their running game going they loom as a genuine threat. After a tight first few quarters, the Giants can overcome Sydney in what should be a close one.

Players List:
SWANS:

AFL Live Richmond Tigers vs Hawthorn Hawks Live Streaming Free 2018 AFL Playoff Seasons Online, match will be kick off at MCG Stadium, Melbourne, VIC, Australia, Thursday 06 September 2018 online, 19:20 pm (AEDT) and its broadcast on Channel Seven, Foxtell.

Richmond take on Hawthorn in the first of the AFL Qualifying Finals and the action gets underway at 7.20PM on Thursday night, September 6, at the MCG.

A crowd of over 85000 is expected at the home of footy and a Preliminary Final berth awaits the winner. Channel 7 and Fox Footy will broadcast the game live.

Richmond have been the team to beat in 2018 and have won 18 of their 22 regular season matches. Their four losses all came interstate and they are unbeaten at the MCG in 2018.

However, a couple of sides have come close in recent times, including the Western Bulldogs, who missed out by just three points in Round 23 in what was a ‘dead rubber’ for the Tigers, who had already qualified for the finals in top position.

Their opponents, Hawthorn, snuck into the top four, finishing 4th after their stirring win over the Sydney Swans in Round 23. The Hawks have won 15 of 22 this season and are one of the form sides, winning their past six games.

In their win over Sydney they came back from 26 points down in the second quarter to score by nine. Their youngsters, including Harry Morrison and James Worpel, were instrumental in the win, while seasoned campaigners including Shaun Burgoyne and Liam Shiels steadied the ship earlier on.

Despite their solid recent form, Hawthorn head in as underdogs. A number of the Tigers big names have been in brilliant touch this year including Jack Riewoldt, who kicked more goals than any other player in the home and away season with 65 majors for the year.

Riewoldt is one player that will need to be stopped if Hawthorn are to score an upset, while Dustin Martin is another that will need to be curtailed by the Hawks. However, the Tigers are very even across the field and are renowned for their pressure game. They have conceded fewer goals and inside 50s than the Hawks in 2018, while they have also averaged more goals.

Hawthorn have found the football more than Richmond this season with the likes of Tom Mitchell and Jaegar O’Meara leading the way, while the Hawks should also have the advantage in the ruck with Ben McEvoy likely to get on top of Toby Nankervis.

If Luke Breust and Jack Gunston can find enough supply up forward, they are always a chance but they will need to be at their best to set up a win and a subsequent Preliminary Final berth. Otherwise, either Melbourne or Geelong await in a sudden death Semi Final

It was the Good Friday match against North Melbourne in Round 2 that sent the Saints season into freefall. Sitting at 1-0 and expected to make the finals, the Saints dished up one of the worst performances I have ever seen, kicking 5.13 and finishing 52-point losers.

The Saints wouldn’t win again for another 11 weeks, with a 71-point loss to the Sydney Swans at Etihad Stadium the lowest moment for the club. The Saints enjoyed a good month of footy after that, with victories against Gold Coast, Melbourne and Carlton all in a four-week timeframe.

Again, the Saints again fell away. Losses to Western Bulldogs, Richmond, GWS and Essendon all by 25 points or more had the head coach Alan Richardson in hot water. They showed up on Saturday night against the Hawks, losing by just four points in a nail-biting finish.

North Melbourne cannot make Finals, however, they still have plenty to play for, with star forward Ben Brown only two goals behind Jack Riewoldt in the Coleman Medal race. Against a St Kilda defence who has allowed over 100 points 11 times this season, Brown will fancy his chances kicking a bag.

It’s been a good season for the Kangaroos, who have won 11 matches and have lost four by 10 points or less.

Ben Jacobs (concussion) and Taylor Garner (hamstring) are likely to not return in Round 23 now that finals are not a possibility for the Kangaroos. Jarryn Geary (concussion) should be fit to play on Sunday, whilst Jake Carlisle (back) is still listed as a test.

Players List:

This is the second last game of the home and away season and the result will place together the final pieces of the puzzle that is the make up of the top eight.

The winner of this contest will most likely end up in 5th position on the ladder and gain a home final, while the loser will slip to 7th and a road trip in week one of the finals series.

If Melbourne lose and Geelong win by at least six goals against the Gold Coast, the Demons will slip to 8th, meaning that the two sides could play each other again in a fortnight.

Both sides had varying fortunes in Round 22. Melbourne finally defeated a top eight side, registering a confidence and character building victory against the West Coast Eagles in Perth.

The 17 point victory effectively booked Melbourne what will be their first finals appearance since 2006, a massive relief to their long suffering fans, who watched on in agonising fashion last year when the Demons just missed out.

On the same weekend, GWS suffered a 20 point loss to their cross-town rivals, Sydney, in a game where the Giants simply ran out of steam after a couple of their key players were cut down by injury.

The Round 23 fixture between Melbourne and GWS sees a couple of the competition’s A-grade midfield lineups square off against one another. Despite their injuries, GWS rank similarly to the Demons in a number of statistical measures and are 3rd in the competition for contested possessions, while they are 1st for clearances. Melbourne are 1st and 3rd in these areas respectively. However, the Demons top the competition for hitouts and scoring.

Max Gawn is one player that should have a massive influence for Melbourne. The ruckman is just about a lock for All-Australian selection, while Clayton Oliver, Angus Brayshaw and Nathan Jones are other players that should provide the Demons with plenty of supply up forward.

For the Giants, Dylan Shiel, Callan Ward and Stephen Coniglio should be able to match motors with the Demons in the midfield but the absence of a number of key big men does not help their cause.

Melbourne have no injuries out of the West Coast game and are likely to remain unchanged. Jack Viney is still a couple of weeks away. Josh Wagner and Tom Bugg have some solid form at VFL level.

GWS may be without both Phil Davis and Ryan Griffen after that pair went down in the loss to Sydney last weekend. Toby Greene will also miss but Josh Kelly is expected to return.

The two sides have met on 10 occasions and the ledger is split at five wins apiece. Last year, GWS claimed the Round 20 Spotless Stadium clash by 15 points but in Round 2 it was Melbourne by two points at the MCG.

Melbourne have won three of the four games between the two sides at the MCG but have lost six of their 10 hitouts at the venue this season. GWS have ventured to the home of footy just once in 2018 for a win over Collingwood in Round 2.
