The loss of Jeremy Cameron to start the season is a huge blow for GWS who open 2016 with such lofty expectations and a goal to make their first finals appearance. Melbourne have slowly built a squad that they believe is ready to take the next step, but the absurd comments from one radio personality whom labelled them finalists is laughable.
Melbourne defeated GWS in round 23 last year by 26 points, at Etihad Stadium, on the back of exceptional games from Bernie Vince and Nathan Jones, but before that GWS had won the previous four games by 37, 32, 64 and 45 points. Included in those wins for GWS was a triumph at the MCG in round 21, 2014.
Last year Melbourne won 7 games, including the opening game of the season against Gold Coast. The Giants finished 2015 with 11 wins after opening the season with back-to-back victories and winning six of their first eight games.
Melbourne averaged a league low 188.4 kicks per game last year and were 17th in total possessions with 339.7 per game. GWS averaged 363.9 possessions per game, of which 199.3 were kicks. Melbourne were 16th in goals in 2015 with 10.2 goals per game, while GWS finished 12th with 12.2 goals per game. Before their victory in round 23 last year, Melbourne had lost four in a row and in three of those losses had scored 55, 55 and 54. GWS were 3-8 away from home last year with their victories coming over St.Kilda, Carlton and Gold Coast. Jesse Hogan kicked five goals over two games against the Giants last year with three of them coming in Melbourne’s win.
The Wolf is not excited by Melbourne, but with the advantage of playing at the MCG and with Jeremy Cameron absent for the Giants, The Wolf just doesn’t think the visitors will kick a dominant score.
