Fremantle take on Essendon on Saturday night in AFL Round 2 action.
The 8.10PM (AEDT) will be the first ever for the Dockers at Perth Stadium but it is the Bombers that head in as favourites. All the action will be broadcast on Channel 7 and Fox Footy.
Fremantle come off a 50-point loss to Port Adelaide in Round 1 but can improve back in Perth. It will be interesting to see how the home side fare at the new venue of Perth Stadium. Their local rivals, West Coast, were rolled at the venue last weekend but the big crowd certainly boosted the home side, particularly in the third term of that clash.
The Dockers opponents, Essendon, outfit that staged a come from behind victory over last year’s Grand Finalists, Adelaide, in Round 1. The Bombers fleet footed brigade combined with their tall forwards in Cale Hooker, Joe Daniher and James Stewart to swing the game.
John Worsfold’s side are tipped to further improve this year after rising from 18th in 2016 to 8th last year. They have a host of midfielders in good form, including David Zaharakis and Dyson Heppell, while their depth has been bolstered by the off-season signings in Jake Stringer, Devon Smith and Adam Saad. Of that trio, Smith made the greatest impression last week, collecting 23 touches.
Key players for Fremantle include Aaron Sandilands, Nathan Fyfe and Lachie Neale. Sandilands, who has finally had an injury free time of it, had 52 hitouts last weekend and should get on top in the middle.
Neale and Fyfe will look to get the Dockers runners involved and if they can move the ball with better efficiency this weekend they are well and truly in the hunt. The home side will also need to lift their tackling pressure and were outnumbered in this area last weekend.
A loss for the Dockers will see them off to a 0-2 start but a win gets them back to 1-1. Essendon will be out to make it two wins from as many starts in 2018.
