Gold Coast will not get a better chance to kickstart their 2016 campaign with Gary Ablett returning and a visit from the depleted Essendon. The Bombers changes are high across the board and they enter this game with a plethora of changes to the team on the field.
Essendon had been very successful against Gold Coast since they entered the league, but the Suns got up and snatched victory in their last clash by two points in front of their home fans. Aaron Hall collecting 31 possessions for the Suns that day. Prior to that Essendon has won by 139, 17, 43 and 19 points.
Last year Gold Coast won 4 games, their first year under Rodney Eade, as they battled an injury list longer than it took Savage Garden to fly to the moon and back. Essendon finished 2015 with six victories in a season that was again covered in controversy.
Both Gold Coast and Essendon only scored over 100 points on three occasions last year as they dwelled in 14th and 15th for goals per game with the Suns kicking 10.7 and the Bombers kicking 10.3 goals per game. Gary Ablett has played 274 games and kicked 368 goals in a career that includes Premierships and Brownlow Medals, but the Son of God had his streak come to an end at eight for consecutive appearances in the All-Australian team last year as he battled injuries and played in just six games. Gold Coast were 3-1-7 at home last year with their victories coming over Brisbane, North Melbourne and Essendon in round 21. With a draw against West Coast.
Gold Coast will win and should win comfortably over Essendon, but the Suns have question marks over kicking a huge score and might not have the ammunition to win by 10 goals.
