The improved St Kilda Saints want to play finals spoiler again after holding Geelong to a draw last week whilst the Swans must win to remain in fourth spot.
The Swans welcome back star trio Lance Franklin, Gary Rohan and Tom Mitchell with Jake Lloyd, Dean Towers and James Rose all being dropped. They are without Ben McGlynn and Luke Parker from their best 22. For the Saints, veterans Adam Schneider and Sean Dempster come in along with David Armitage and Dylan Roberton Farren Ray, Cameron Shenton, Tim Membrey and Josh Saunders are out along with at least five of their best 22.
The Saints drew with Geelong last round after having lost their three games before that to be 13th on the ladder. They finished over 96-points for just the second time this season. The Swans have won three of their past four games including an 89-point thrashing of GWS last weekend. Sydney is 12-0 (5-7 against the line) vs bottom ten teams this season. Before last week, the Swans had averaged just 72 points per game in the last six weeks but did notch their highest score for the year last week.
The Saints and Swans have played 211 times with Sydney leading 131-77 with three draws. The Swans have won the last four straight and six of the last seven matches. Since 2012, Sydney is 4-1 (2-3 against the line) vs St Kilda. St Kilda is 10-23-1 (17-17 against the line) at the Docklands since the start of 2013. The Swans are 21-10 (20-11 at the line) when outside of Sydney in the past three seasons – that’s 15-5 (11-9 against the line) in 2014-15. Sydney is 7-1 (6-2 against the line) under the roof of Etihad Stadium since the start of 2012. Six of the past seven games have totalled under 184-points. Josh Kennedy is averaging 34 possessions in the last three games.
The Saints were quite impressive when drawing against Geelong last weekend but Sydney is a step up from that. What stands out for The Wolf is Sydney’s tall forward set-up with the inclusion of Lance Franklin alongside the in-form Kurt Tippett and Sam Reid set to monster the under-sized Hugh Goddard and Sam Fisher. The Swans have been fortunate with a favourable draw before finals with potential confidence building matches against GWS, St Kilda and Gold Coast to round out the home and away season. Sydney ball-magnet Josh Kennedy has hit a purple patch and should spur the Swannies onto another big win and a top four spot.
