St Kilda have endured a topsy-turvy season and have won five of their 10 encounters. Those five wins came in a six week period but they have since lost their past two games in convincing fashion to Sydney and the Western Bulldogs.

They head into this fresh after enjoying the bye last weekend, while Adelaide’s most recent hitout came against Geelong, which resulted in a 22-point defeat.

The Crows are expected to bounce back at their home ground of Adelaide Oval. They remain the competition’s highest scoring side of 2017 and are ranked No.1 in the competition for contested possession.

Rory Sloane is the chief contributor in this area and it will be interesting to see if the Saints take a leaf out of Geelong’s book and opt to tag the Crows ballwinner. Sloane was on the receiving end of some close attention from Scott Selwood and while he still managed to pick up 23 possessions he was down on his usual effectiveness.

Matt Crouch is another player the Saints will have to be mindful of containing. The 22 year old averages 32 touches per game. St Kilda’s chief ballwinners include Sebastian Ross and Jack Steven.

The Saints are capable of mixing it with the top sides- they knocked over GWS last month- but they will need to play with plenty of run and dare and they will also need a lift from some of their forwards.

Tim Membrey and Paddy McCartin have been sharing the duties deep in attack but their output has been limited in their recent losses.

At the other end, Jake Carlisle and Nathan Brown look set to get the job on Crows forwards, Taylor Walker and Josh Jenkins. Eddie Betts looms as a dangerous proposition for the Saints and has booted 12 goals in the last three games between the two sides.

A Crows win will see them safely inside the top four at the end of the round, while St Kilda need the four points to stay in touch as the bottleneck for spots in the lower end of the eight begins to form.

Melbourne will need big game from Jack Viney and Nathan Jones but will look to some of their lesser lights to shine and play four quarters of solid footy. Christian Petracca, Christian Salem and Tomas Bugg are among those that need to lift and were in and out of the game against the Hawks last week.

Statistically, the two sides compare similarly in terms of possession. Both figure among the top teams for total disposals. Adelaide have won more contested possessions, while Melbourne are in front in terms of uncontested possession.

A key difference is Adelaide’s potent attack. The Crows average a whopping 127 points per game and have been lethal at Adelaide Oval this year.

It is hard to see Melbourne’s back six limiting the likes of Taylor Walker and Eddie Betts but if they use the Kangaroos game as a blueprint, they are an outside chance of causing an upset.

The competition’s two Adelaide based sides, Port Adelaide and the Adelaide Crows, take on one another this weekend in what is dubbed as Showdown 42.

Port Adelaide have surprised many with their early season form and their improvement seems to have stemmed from a reinvigorated midfield lineup.

Ollie Wines and Travis Boak already look a lot sharper than last year, while one youngster that has everyone talking is Sam Powell- Pepper, who at this stage looks the pick of the current crop of draftees.

The form of this trio has loosened the chain somewhat for Robbie Gray and Chad Wingard. Both are spending a lot more time in the forward line. Gray booted six goals in the 89-point win over Freo last week. Throw Paddy Ryder into the mix as ruckman and the Power are somewhere near their 2014 form.

However, it is only early days and Ken Hinkley’s side will need to be every bit as good as they were three years ago to match Adelaide. The Crows have been rampant thus far, demolishing the flag favourites, GWS, at this venue in Round 1 by 56 points, before accounting for Hawthorn by 24 last weekend.

As was the case in 2016, the Crows top the competition for points scored and their dangerous forward line including Eddie Betts, Josh Jenkins, Taylor Walker and Mitch McGovern will need to be contained by the Power.

On face value, the Crows also seem to have the depth around the ground. Charlie Cameron and Curtly Hampton contributed well in the come from behind win over Hawthorn, while Sam Jacobs comes off a best on ground performance.

However, the resurgent Power have finally struck some form and they are a dangerous proposition when they are up and about. This will be a tight one.

A highlight was their high scoring, piling on 22 goals for the game. The Crows were the competitions best in 2016 for points scored, averaging 114 points per game, and early indication’s are that they have lost nothing in this area.

Taylor Walker returns to take on the Hawks and will join a forward line that already boasts the likes of Eddie Betts, Josh Jenkins and Mitch McGovern.

Walker’s side have been installed as $1.72 favourite’s, despite having a poor record against Hawthorn as well as being the away team this weekend.

The Hawks have now won just two of their past seven home and away games (stretching back to Round 20 last year) and claimed just one of their three pre-season matches.

For Alistair Clarkson’s side to lift they will need to move the ball down to their forwards a lot quicker than they did last week and attempt to trap the ball inside their forward 50, which was a hallmark of their recent success.

However, with rebounding football, the Crows will be dangerous. Look for Rory Laird and Rory Atkins to set up plenty of play from the back half of the ground for Adelaide, while Sam Jacobs should also give his side first use.

Hawthorn will need to finish off better. Luke Breust, Jack Gunston and Paul Puopolo combined for just three goals last weekend and will be out for an improved showing.
