Round 6 of the AFL home and away season gets underway when the Western Bulldogs take on Carlton at Etihad Stadium on Friday night.

The April 27 encounter gets underway at 7.50PM and it is the Dogs that head in as favourites against the Blues, who are yet to win a game this year. Channel 7 and Fox Footy will broadcast the game.

The two sides have combined for just the one win in 2018. That went the way of the Western Bulldogs, who defeated Essendon in Round 3. Since then the 2016 premiers have gone down to Sydney by seven points and Fremantle by 54.

Carlton battled through their first four games before putting on an improved showing by just falling short behind one of the ladder leaders in West Coast last weekend. They went down to the Eagles by 10 points at the MCG.

An interesting feature of this game is that both sides have struggled to impact the scoreboard in 2018. Carlton average just 67 points, while the Dogs have fared slightly better with 72 points per game. Both sides are conceding a tick over 100 points.

It may be a case of the side that stands up the most in the middle of the ground. Patrick Cripps has been in great form for Carlton and is one of the reasons why the Blues rank higher than the Dogs for winning contested possessions and clearances. Other key players for Brendan Bolton’s side are their defenders, Sam Rowe and Liam Jones, as well as the ever reliable, Kade Simpson and Ed Curnow.

At the Bulldogs, their coach Luke Beveridge will need to find a way for his side to avoid the lapses that have plagued them this year. They were flat on the road last weekend but were good the two weeks prior to that.

Marcus Bontempelli and Jackson Macrae have been in good touch for the Bulldogs but it is their second tier players that will need to lift if they are going to get their running game going.

Carlton produced one terrific quarter against the reigning premiers in Round 1, since It’s been a tough start to the season for Blues. After kicking the first five goals against Richmond, the Blues have been outscored 66 goals to 34.

The most concerning aspect of these losses for Blues fans is, they have been steadily regressing in every match. Their 86-point loss to North Melbourne last Saturday was embarrassing.

Blues head coach Brendon Bolton spoke post game, saying “It’s not what we stand for. We need far more contributors, particularly in and around the contested ball and ground-ball gets.”

Nothing went right for Carlton, as skipper Marc Murphy pulled out only three minutes before the game with a foot injury.

Looking on the positives for the Blues, the Western Bulldogs have shown, nothing is ever as bad as it seems. With the closeness of the competition, a few good weeks can put any team right back in the hunt in 2018.

It’s only Round 5, but the West Coast Eagles are already exceeding expectations in 2018. They are sitting second on the ladder behind the Giants and are 3-1 with three convincing victories. The Eagles broke their travelling hoodoo in Round 2, with a 51-point win over the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium.

The Eagles are coming off a 80-point thrashing of the Gold Coast Suns. The Eagles kicked 17 goals to six after quarter-time and celebrated Marc LeCras and Nic Naitanui’s milestone games in terrific fashion.

Elliot Yeo finished with a game-high 33 disposals, 11 marks and five tackles. Andrew Gaff and Chris Mastern both picked up over 30 possessions while big man Josh Kennedy booted five goals.

Blundstone Arena in Hobart sees action for the first time in 2018 when the 11th placed Kangaroos take on the 18th placed Blues. It is certainly a game that could potentially go either way- it is hard for a punter to trust either of these sides, but the Wolf thinks he has found a good play on the Overs. Ignore the two outliers of the Kangaroos season- inaccuracy and cyclonic weather led to lower scores than it should have; and Carlton are certainly not shy in inviting teams into their backline again and again. Which team can take advantage of the expected high winds and start to climb off the bottom of the ladder?

North Melbourne (LWL) – The Kangaroos sit pretty much where the Wolf expected them to preseason, with patches of good footy punctuated by long periods of complete disarray. They couldn’t find a way to stem the momentum of the Demons last round, but they hung in better against the Saints in round 2. If they knew what the 2 big sticks looked like in that game they might have won by 100.

Carlton (LLL) – Brenton Bolton must have a very big book of cliches and buzz words- because Carlton just keep finding a way to lose when Bolton insists they are making good progress. Charlie Curnow and Patrick Cripps have proved they are genuine stars of the competition- but at the moment the defence and midfield are a shambles, and there is no beating around the bush in that respect.

The Wolf is not expecting a pretty clash down in windy Hobart, and is not recommending tuning into the game! That being said, there are still a few interesting markets from a punting perspective that look to have some value. North Melbourne are well versed in how to play in Hobart, and it will certainly have some semblance of home for them. Based on that, and the likelihood of an open midfield battle, the Wolf is expecting the Roos to prevail in a high-scoring encounter.

Carlton Blues vs Collingwood Magpies match will be kickoff at MCG Stadium, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, Friday 06 April 2018 online, 19:50 pm (AEDT) and its broadcast on Channel Seven, Foxtell.

AFL Football Online

Round 3 of the AFL home and away season gets underway on Friday April 6 when the traditional rivals, Carlton and Collingwood, clash under the MCG lights.

Both sides will be desperate to gain some ground on the rest of the competition after dropping their first two games and the action gets underway at 7.50PM AEST. Fox Footy and 7mate will broadcast the game.

Carlton come off an upset loss to the Gold Coast Suns in Round 2 and the Blues were no match for the Tom Lynch inspired Queensland outfit, going down by 34 points.

In Round 1, Brendan Bolton’s side were outplayed by last year’s premiers, Richmond, and find themselves in familiar territory in the lower rungs of the ladder.

It has been a sense of deja-vu for Collingwood as well. Nathan Buckley’s side have been decimated by injuries early on this year and have gone down to Hawthorn and GWS in their opening two matches.

However, the Magpies can take some degree of optimism into the game, given their solid effort to almost overpower one of the flag fancies last weekend. The Magpies senior players, including Scott Pendlebury, Steele Sidebottom and Brodie Grundy should ensure they can match motors with an out of sorts Carlton outfit.

Brendan Bolton’s side showed plenty of promise in the pre-season JLT Community Series but haven’t been able to put it together when it counts.

The Blues have been good at winning the contested footy but their lack of marking options inside forward 50 continues to haunt them. Asides from a five-goal cameo from Charlie Curnow in the Round 1 clash against Richmond, they have been largely dysfunctional up forward.

A lot may hinge on the availability of Matthew Kreuzer. If the injury prone ruckman can force his way into the side, this should help the likes of Patrick Cripps, Marc Murphy and Ed Curnow to have a greater say on proceedings.

Carlton take on Gold Coast in one of four games on Easter Saturday and the action gets underway at 1.45PM.

The Round 2 encounter presents a great opportunity for both sides to notch up an early season win and it is the Blues that will head in as favourites. Fox Footy will broadcast the game live.

Carlton faced a tough assignment in their first game of the season, taking on the premiers, Richmond, in the traditional season opener at the MCG.

The Blues held their own for much of the game before fading in the last quarter, going down by 26 points. Charlie Curnow booted five goals, while Patrick Cripps played a blinder in the middle, registering 36 disposals.

Their opponents in Round 2, Gold Coast, come off a win under their new coach Stuart Dew. In extremely wet and soggy conditions, the Suns toughed it out to win by 16 points in a low scoring game over North Melbourne. Jack Bowes and Jarryd Lyons were a couple of the key contributors.

Despite their efforts, the Suns head in as underdogs for the Round 2 clash but they may be the value in the betting. Under Dew, they are unbeaten so far in 2018- if you take into account the JLT Series in which they won both of their games. In 2017, both sides won six of their 22 matches across the season.

Carlton hold the favouritism tag on the back of the home ground advantage, while the school of thought is that their younger players are more advanced than their Suns counterparts at the moment and their list is more rounded.

Brendan Bolton’s side have the added benefit of having a couple of their veterans in form including Marc Murphy and Kade Simpson and do look to have more depth.

Tom Lynch and Steven May are a couple of players that can influence the game for the Suns. Lynch was unable to boot a goal last weekend but should find the conditions a lot more conducive this weekend. He booted seven against Carlton at this venue last year.

AFL Live Richmond Tigers vs Carlton Blues Streaming Free 2018 Regular Seasons week 01 match will be kick off at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne, VIC, Australia, Thursday 22 March 2018 online, 19:25 pm (AEDT) and its broadcast on Channel Seven, Foxtell.

AFL Live Stream 2018

The long wait for the 2018 AFL home and away season to begin will be over on Thursday March 25 when Richmond take on Carlton in the traditional season opener at the MCG.

The Tigers head in as favourites for the big clash that gets underway at 7.25PM. All the action can be seen live on Channel 7 and Fox Footy.

Richmond begin their quest to go back to back after last year’s drought breaking premiership and will unfurl their flag in front of what should be a crowd of over 80,000 people.

The Tigers will be out to avoid the dreaded hangover this year, something that beset the 2016 winners, the Western Bulldogs, last year and all signs have been positive so far in the pre-season.

Damien Hardwick’s men looked super impressive in both of their JLT Community Series games, defeating Essendon by 87 and North Melbourne by 70. They head into this as $1.20 favourites in early markets with CrownBet.

Carlton have been steadily improving under coach Brendan Bolton, who enters his third year in charge of the Blues. Their host of younger players, including Jacob Wietering, Patrick Cripps and Caleb Marchbank have been impressive. If those players combine with the likes of Marc Murphy and Kade Simpson their side is in with a chance.

However, the task at hand in this particular game does seem pretty difficult for the Blues. Dustin Martin, Josh Caddy, Shane Edwards and Alex Rance are just a handful of familiar names that have looked good in the pre-season and the Tigers should have too many answers on Thursday.

Richmond will be without at least two of their premiership heroes in Daniel Rioli (foot) and Nathan Broad (suspension), while there are slight doubts on Bachar Houli.

Carlton have stated that Matthew Kruezer will be ok to line up despite concerns over an ankle injury. Sam Rowe, Darcy Lang and Jarrod Garlett are among others that will be assessed at training during the week.

Richmond have won their past six against Carlton by an average margin of just over four goals. The Tigers won the corresponding game last year by 43 points. Dustin Martin has been a dominant force in recent times in games between the two sides, while Patrick Cripps has been a solid contributor for the Blues.

Hawthorn remains a slim chance of making another finals campaign, depending on several results falling its way. The Hawks are six points behind eighth-placed West Coast but firstly they must defeat Carlton on Saturday night. They have enjoyed a 14-game winning streak against the Blues, who last defeated them in round six, 2005. In Hawthorn’s first game at Etihad Stadium in 14 months, the ruck battle between All-Australian aspirants Matthew Kreuzer and Ben McEvoy should be enthralling, but Carlton lacks depth in the midfield and the Hawks have much more firepower up forward. While the gallant Blues played a more attacking style against the Eagles last Saturday, they struggle to score more than 80 points and will not find it any easier against a revitalised Hawks defence led by exciting youngsters James Sicily and Ryan Burton.

When these clubs last played in round 19 last season, it was a low-scoring affair from start to finish. Hawthorn led by six points at half-time (2.8 to 1.8) before finishing strongly with eight goals to six in the second half. Shaun Burgoyne was best on ground with 25 disposals and one goal.

Carlton remains the lowest-scoring side this season, averaging only 73 points a game and is yet to kick 100 points in a game. Hawthorn has averaged 84 points.

Neither team has been strong in the clearances this season. The Blues are ranked 16th with an average of 34.8, just ahead of the Hawks with an average of 34.1.

This will be the 10th contest between the clubs at Etihad Stadium with the Hawks winning seven games to two. The Blues have lost five of their past six games at the venue.

The teams’ recent form in the past few months has been contrasting. Carlton has lost its past eight games and Hawthorn has won five of their past eight and had a draw.

Veteran Shaun Burgoyne has enjoyed another fine season and remains the second-ranked small-medium defender in the Schick AFL Player Ratings with 491.1 points. Carlton’s Sam Docherty is ranked fifth in this category with 429.5 points.

IT’S A BIG WEEK FOR … Taylor Duryea
The 26-year-old has been reinvented as a forward since returning from a knee injury and has been one of the Hawks’ most consistent performers. The dual premiership player would love to celebrate the milestone of his 100th game with a victory on Saturday night.

Like the state-of-the-art facilities under construction at Moorabbin, St Kilda’s first round picks from the 2017 draft are a work in progress.

The Saints are hopeful that staff and players will move into their upgraded Moorabbin base by Easter at the earliest – which can’t come soon enough given players were getting changed in portables covered in graffiti at training on Wednesday.

But luckily Hunter Clark (pick No.7) and Nick Coffield (pick No.8) look a lot better than those portables, so much so that they’ve been named to play against Carlton in the Saints’ JLT Community Series opener at Ikon Park on Wednesday.

And it’ll be a game full of top-end draft talent, with Carlton selecting Paddy Dow (pick No.3) and Lochie O’Brien (pick No.10) to play, meaning four of 2017’s top 10 picks could be on show on Wednesday.

All four draftees played in their clubs’ respective AFLX encounters earlier in February with Dow arguably putting in the best performance during that carnival.

The Saints will also welcome back David Armitage and Paddy McCartin to their side. Armitage only played two games in 2017 (rounds one and four) due to a groin injury while McCartin could only manage five due to ongoing concussion concerns, the last of which came in round 12.

McCartin has been concussed on six occasions, the last of which was in June, ending his 2017 season. The power forward suffered a foot strain during pre-season training in November. Prior to the foot strain he had run a personal best time in the club’s 3km time trial.

Sydney are a game behind fourth placed Richmond and just percentage behind fifth placed Port Adelaide. Should the Tigers slip up and Sydney win by enough to bridge the small percentage gap on the Power, the Swans will finish inside the top four for the sixth season in a row.

John Longmire’s side travelled to Adelaide last weekend and in what was one of the better games of the year, they came away with a three-point win. Josh Kennedy and Lance Franklin were the stars, with Franklin producing another magical solo effort- a running goal from the boundary that brought back memories of the goal of the year he produced in 2010 when playing at Hawthorn.

Franklin will be a major focal point this weekend, as well as Kennedy and they are two players that Carlton will need to stop.

The Blues snapped an eight-game losing streak last weekend by defeating Hawthorn by seven points and that win elevated them to 15th position on the ladder, in what is another rebuilding year at the club.

A highlight of the win were the efforts of some of their younger players in Charlie Curnow and Jarrod Pickett, while seasoned players in Marc Murphy, Bryce Gibbs and Matthew Kruezer also stood up.

That group will need huge games once again to trouble Sydney but their 22 may just lack the depth to match the home side.

The Swans lead the Blues in a number of statistical measures, most notably contested possession and clearances and given the form they are in, they shouldn’t have too many troubles in accounting for their rivals.

Sydney have very few injury concerns at the moment and a number of players are knocking on the door for selection with good form in the NEAFL, including Harry Cunningham, Shaun Edwards and Allir Allir.

Carlton’s Billie Smedts suffered a concussion against Hawthorn last weekend and may miss. Nick Graham is among a host of players that could come in.

StatsCarlton ended a run of outs against Sydney by defeating the Swans by 19 points earlier this year. The Round 6 fixture was the Swans sixth loss in succession but they have since rebounded.

Prior to that, the Sydneysiders had won the past seven games between the two clubs with four of those held at the SCG. Carlton are one from five when travelling interstate this season, while Sydney have won six from 10 at their home ground in 2017.

Much like what happened in 2016, Carlton’s latter part of the season has seen them fall away after a promising patch in the middle of the year. The Blues have lost eight on the trot, although they have been competitive in a number of those.

They were in front of West Coast in the early parts of the last quarter last weekend before eventually going down by 17 points.

Conversely, Hawthorn have been one of the form sides of the competition of late and have matched it with the competition’s best, winning five of eight and drawing another.

Last weekend they held out North Melbourne by 27 points. The Hawks are in 12th position on the ladder and still a mathematical possibility of making the eight but would need a series of unlikely results from other games to sneak in.

They venture to Etihad Stadium for the first time this season and have a number of players in great form, including Tom Mitchell, Isaac Smith, Jack Gunston and James Silcily.

Mitchell is into second favouritism for the Brownlow at $5.50 with CrownBet and is sure to find a stack of the footy this weekend, while Gunston and Sicily have been providing plenty of class and rebound in their new roles across halfback.

Those players will need big games once again, while at Carlton, look for Marc Murphy, Bryce Gibbs and Matthew Kruezer to have an influence. Kruezer is in All-Australian contention and takes on Ben McEvoy in the ruck.

A concern for Carlton is their lack of firepower up forward. Levi Casboult has bobbed up with 31 goals this season but the Blues are yet to kick over 100 points in any of their games this year and rank last for points scored. Their coach, Brendan Bolton, has some homework to do if he is to find the winning formula against his former club.
