The AFL competition’s two Queensland based sides, the Gold Coast Suns and the Brisbane Lions, launch their home and away campaigns on Saturday when they square off at the Suns home ground of Metricon Stadium.
Both sides will be looking to make amends this year after disappointing campaigns in 2016. The action gets underway at 8.05PM AEST and will be broadcast on Fox Sports. AFL Live Vision is also available to ALL CrownBet members. Every Match, wherever you are.
Gold Coast enter in as favourites against their local rivals and unlike large proportions of the past two years, they have a relatively healthy squad of players to choose from.
Gary Ablett, David Swallow, Steven May and Tom Lynch are ready to go for the expansion club as are their new recruits in Michael Barlow, Pearce Hanley, Jarrad Lyons and Jarrad Witts.
The Suns played some encouraging football in the recent JLT Community Series, winning the first two of their three games before going down in a close one to last year’s premiers, the Western Bulldogs.
They face a Brisbane outfit that are widely tipped to finish last this season. The Lions went down to the Suns as recently as week 1 of the JLT Series and split their remaining two games, defeating an undermanned Bulldogs before going down to Adelaide by 39 points.
A concerning aspect of their loss to Adelaide was that they conceded 21 goals. Their fans will be hoping this isn’t a sign of things to come. Last year the Lions conceded a whopping 130 points per game.
Their new coach, Chris Fagan, has been developing a system that is aimed at tightening up the leaky defence and it will be interesting to see if his backmen can stop the flood. What won’t help Fagan is the fact that their key defender, Jack Frost, will be missing the game due to suspension. Tom Lynch and Peter Wright may have a field day on Saturday.
Dayne Beams takes over as skipper for the Lions and has been in great form in the JLT Series, as has Dayne Zorko and Tom Rockliff but the Suns may just have too much depth here.
