Richmond are fifth on the ladder with a 10-6 record following their win over the Brisbane Lions. The Tigers have now won five of their last seven clashes and have conceded more than 81 just twice since Round 1 but on both occasions, they have been blowouts of 140 and 138 points. Richmond have the fourth best defence but rank 13th in scoring.

Greater Western Sydney are third on the ladder with a 10-4-2 record. The Giants have won just one of their last five games – a 60-point win over last-placed Brisbane. GWS have played in seven games decided by eight points or fewer this year and have lost only one. The Giants rank fourth in scoring and seventh in defence.

Another under game seems to be on the cards here. Richmond are the preeminent under team in the AFL with 12 under games from 16 matches. They are a huge under team in day games at the MCG and at the MCG overall. GWS go under when they play at the MCG and have been a strong defensive unit this year.

Richmond are currently at the odds of $1.58 in the head to head betting and enjoy favouritism courtesy of the home ground advantage as well a sizzling display in the first week of the finals series when they defeated Geelong by 51 points.

The Tigers had the week off following their Qualifying Final triumph and watched on as GWS comfortably defeated West Coast by 67 points in one of last weekend’s Semi Finals. The Giants faced a sudden death clash against the Eagles after dropping their opening finals encounter to Adelaide by 36 points.

The expansion club venture down from NSW to play in their first ever final at the MCG but should head in with plenty of confidence after finding what may be the right formula to challenge Richmond.

After being criticised for being a tad too top heavy after their loss to Adelaide, the Giants fleet of runners ran amok against the Eagles. Stephen Coniglio, Lachie Whitfield, Callan Ward and Josh Kelly were among their best players, while Stevie Johnson booted six goals in his return to the side.

The Giants midfielders will look to use the wide expanses of the MCG and across the course of the year they have found more of the football than their Tigers counterparts.

After four straight wins, Damien Hardwick is unlikely to make too many changes to his Richmond side. Tyrone Vickery (suspension) will need to be replaced with Liam McBean likely to come in to make his debut. Shaun Grigg and Ben Lennon are biding their time in the VFL. The Giants will be without bookends Tim Mohr (knee) and Jeremy Cameron (ankle) for the rest of the year with Heath Shaw, Sam Frost, Jed Lamb and James Stewart in the mix to replace them.

The Tigers have found their best form but it’s too late to play a finals role although they have the ability to shape the eight. They’ve won four in a row (with two of them against St Kilda and Brisbane) Richmond is 6-3 (4-5 against the line) vs bottom-ten sides in 2014. The Giants are third-last with a 4-13 record having lost four in a row prior to their bye – although all those sides are in the top eight. They’re 3-5 both head-to-head and against the line vs bottom-ten sides this year.

The Tigers were coming off a three game losing streak when they faced GWS in Sydney in round 10 this year. Jack Riewoldt had a field day against sub-par opposition finishing with 11.2 from 17 kicks. Dustin Martin, Brett Deledio and Brandon Ellis all had over 30 touches in the 113-point rout. Richmond had 14.2 up to halftime whilst the Giants kicked only five goals for the whole game .

GWS and Richmond have met three times with the Tigers winning both games by 121, 12 and 113 points respectively. The Giants are 1-2 against the line vs Richmond. Jack Riewoldt has kicked 15 goals in three games vs GWS. Since 2012, Richmond is 10-6 (9-7 against the line) when playing interstate. Richmond is 2-7 (4-5 against the line) at the MCG this year.
