Brisbane Lions vs Hawthorn Hawks match will be kickoff at Moreton Bay Central Sports Complex, Australia, Sunday 03 March 2019 online, 13:40 pm (AEDT) and its broadcast on Channel Seven, Foxtell.
BRISBANE has roared to its first win of the season, crushing Hawthorn by 56 points and giving Luke Hodge the perfect outing against his former club.
After Hawthorn jumped to an early 18-point lead, Chris Fagan’s men first inched their way back and then steamrolled the Hawks with an exhilarating final three terms.
Brisbane trailed by five points at quarter-time but then kicked 16 goals to six to win 20.9 (129) to 11.7 (73).
Hodge was excellent against the team he played 305 games and won four premierships with, but it was a mix of old and new that helped the Lions get off the mark in 2018.
Second-year midfielder Hugh McCluggage finished with a career-high 27 disposals (16 contested) and had a major influence while the match was up for grabs.
After being off with his radar last week, young forward Eric Hipwood was unstoppable, kicking 4.3 and winning four free kicks, so hard was he to match up on.
Captain Dayne Beams was back near his best with 28 disposals and two goals, Dayne Zorko continued his form resurgence with 30 touches, 11 tackles and a goal, while Charlie Cameron produced a Mark of the Year contender to go with two goals.
Ruck Coach Ben Hudson, who will take the reins in the Brisbane Lions first JLT Community Series game this weekend, said the 26-men selected have earned their spot during the pre-season.
“The team’s been based on performances throughout the pre-season,” he told lions.com.au.
“With only two games in the JLT Community Series, we want to have a strong hit out this weekend.”
Ely Smith is the only draftee who will get a run this weekend, after he was named on the extended bench.
“Ely Smith has shown that his contest is his strength,” Hudson said.
“Any chance he has to play against AFL competition will hold him in really good stead.”
Second year player Connor Ballenden will have his first chance at the elite level. The 19-year-old is aiming to make his debut in 2019.
“Connor Ballenden has had a strong second year pre-season,” he said.
“His fitness and work ethic has improved which has granted him an opportunity.”
Joining Ballenden on the extended bench are Ryan Bastinac, Mitch Robinson, Lewis Taylor, Zac Bailey, Rhys Mathieson and Brandon Starcevich.
Nick Robertson, Cedric Cox, Mitch Hinge and Tom Cutler have been named as emergencies.
